Water Efficiency Calculations

What Are Water Efficiency Calculations and Why do I need them?

Water efficiency calculations, also known as water consumption assessments, are evaluations used to estimate the amount of water a dwelling will consume based on the specifications of fixtures and fittings such as taps, showers, toilets, and appliances.

This process includes calculating the expected daily water use per person and comparing it to the Building Regulations water targets, which can range from 125 litres per person per day down to 110 litres per person per day. These targets are established to promote more efficient water use and to minimise unnecessary waste.

The Part G Water Efficiency Calculations Process Explained

Provide your drawings along with a specification of fixtures and fittings. If you are unsure about these details at the Design Stage, don't worry; advice is available to help develop a fully compliant specification that meets Building Regulations water consumption targets.

All water consuming fixtures and fittings within the property, such as taps, showers, baths, toilets, and appliances like dishwashers or washing machines, are assigned a consumption value based on their flow rates or capacity. These values are then combined using a standard calculation method as part of the Part G Water Efficiency Calculations to estimate the total daily water use per person, expressed in litres per person per day. This figure is then compared against the regulatory target, which is typically 125 litres per person per day, or lower if local planning policies apply.

If the calculated water consumption assessments indicate that usage exceeds the target, adjustments will be made to the specification, such as opting for more efficient fixtures or restricting flow rates, to ensure compliance is achieved.

The final results will be documented in a short report, confirming that the development meets Part G requirements and encourages responsible water use.
